Why you’re not showing on Google — 7 reasons (and what to do)

You have a website, but when you search for your company name or services on Google — you don’t appear. Or you show up on page 5, where nobody clicks. It’s frustrating, but there are usually clear causes and fixes. Here are the 7 most common reasons and what to do in 2026.

1. Your site isn’t indexed by Google

If Google doesn’t know your site exists, it won’t display it. Check in Google Search Console whether your site is added and if there are indexing errors.

  • new site — indexing can take 2–4 weeks
  • robots.txt blocks indexing (check the file)
  • page has accidental “noindex” in Yoast
  • sitemap not submitted to Search Console

Fix: add your site to Search Console, submit sitemap, request indexing for homepage and key pages.

2. Insufficient or generic content

Google prioritizes pages with useful, unique content. A site with 3 short pages, copied text or just “Welcome to our website” won’t compete with businesses that have articles, FAQs and detailed service pages.

Fix: dedicated page per service, blog with useful articles, original text with 500+ words on key pages.

3. Weak technical SEO

Technical issues that block ranking:

  • no HTTPS
  • slow site (over 3 seconds on mobile)
  • generic titles (“Home”, “Services”)
  • missing meta descriptions
  • duplicate or missing H1
  • 404 errors, broken links
  • not mobile-optimized

4. High competition for your keyword

“Software development Romania” or “website creation” are extremely competitive. If you’re just starting, you won’t rank quickly on generic national terms — no matter how good your site is.

Fix: target long-tail and local keywords: “website development Constanța”, “WordPress maintenance Constanța”. Less traffic, but higher purchase intent.

5. Missing local SEO

For local businesses, Google Maps and Google Business Profile matter enormously. A site without a complete GBP profile, consistent address and phone, and reviews loses local visibility.

Fix: create/complete Google Business profile, ask for reviews, ensure consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) on site and directories.

6. Site too new — SEO takes time

Organic SEO isn’t instant. A site launched 2 weeks ago won’t beat companies with 3 years of content and backlinks. Realistic expectations: 3–6 months for visible results on medium terms, longer for generic keywords.

Consistency matters: blog articles, optimizations, internal links, reviews — month after month.

7. Zero authority (backlinks)

Google also uses links from other websites as trust signals. If nobody links to you, you’re at a disadvantage versus competitors with dozens of references.

Fix: partnerships (clients, projects), local directories, guest posts, mentions on delivered project sites.

Quick checklist: why you’re not on Google

  • ☐ Sitemap submitted and indexed
  • ☐ Title and meta description on every page
  • ☐ Fast on mobile
  • ☐ HTTPS active
  • ☐ Unique content on service pages + blog
  • ☐ Complete Google Business Profile
  • ☐ At least 3–5 Google reviews
  • ☐ Internal links between pages
  • ☐ Realistic timeline (3–6 months)

FAQ

How long until I appear on Google?

Indexing can happen in days to weeks. Ranking on first pages for competitive keywords takes months.

Does Google Ads help organic SEO?

Not directly. Ads bring immediate paid traffic; organic SEO is separate, long-term, without cost per click.

Can I do SEO myself?

Basic elements (content, titles) yes. Technical aspects (speed, schema, sitemap, errors) are more efficient with a specialist.
